Week 8 Mission Report

"So, we have been living with this term ‘design thinking’ in our everyday life for a while now. And it had become such a buzzword. And that is my precise problem with design thinking in today’s society and particularly in the design community now is a kind of complete lack of criticism on it."

from Natasha Jen's "Design Thinking is Bullshit" talk

So how can design help people "get free?" I think using buzzwords such as "design thinking" makes the field a lot more convoluted than it should be, although I am not a grad student nor a working professional so maybe I don't understand its use beyond it being a buzzword. I feel like a lot of design thinking can often come across as pretentious and condescending, because it seems as though there is an implicit understanding that many people can't keep up with. "Design thinking", "Intersection of art and technology", what do those kind of things mean and imply? And are they truly helping us work towards a better future? I think for us to get free means we have to keep things simple. I'm not exactly sure what that looks like, but i think everyone yearns for a more innocuous, simpler time without algorithms or targeted ads or productivity apps that claim they'll make you more organized. I think at least people in design are becoming more self aware of usage of buzzwords, so that is nice. I just do believe the conversation needs to be simplified, but I don't know how to do that without contradicting myself either.
